Katy Estrada, CPA

An expense does not have to be indispensable to be considered necessary. My rule of thumb is to ask yourself "Did I spend this money to help create future income?"

Biography

Katy Estrada

After completing her Bachelor of Accountancy at New Mexico State University in 1999, Katy went to work for a local CPA firm, Pulakos and Alongi, Ltd (now Pulakos, CPAs), in Albuquerque, NM. The firm taught her about different types of businesses in the Albuquerque area where she met many individuals and small business owners. Katy, as a Tax Senior, specialized in preparing business and individual tax returns. She performed month-end closing for many types of business clients (compilations, reviews, and audits in compliance with GAAP, along with non-audited business and individual financial statements), assisted clients with accounting software issues (Excel, Word, and QuickBook questions), internal control procedures, and writing correspondence to taxing authorities in order to facilitate lower penalties and interest for business and individual clients.

In May of 2004, Katy passed the fourth part of the Certified Public Accounting exam and in June, went to work for William A. Harrison, MD, Barbara S. Van Eeckhout, MD, and Nancy L. Kerr, MD as a Business Office Manager and Accountant. It was here that Katy found her niche in providing bookkeeping services and completing complex bookkeeping and payroll issues for separate companies that shared employees, supplies and patients.

A few months later, in December of 2004, the company Katy Estrada, CPA was formed. Katy’s goal was to provide small businesses and individuals assistance with their tax situations. The company started out small, but as the physicians she worked for slowed their practice, retired or relocated, Katy decided to expand her small business.

In 2008, Katy moved her practice to Southern New Mexico in order to support her husband in his new business venture. Despite the move, Katy was able to keep 95% of her clients, supporting them via internet, e-mail, fax, phone and quarterly meetings.

Katy is the oldest of five children and was raised in the same small town she recently moved back to. For details of the area, visit Hidalgo County’s official website. Her father teaches at the local school, Animas Public Schools. Her mother is a Technology Specialist with Lordsburg Public Schools. Katy is the proud mother of two children, Ryan (age 10) and Rachel (age 8). Her hobbies include volleyball, coaching, geocaching, gardening, quilting, and New Mexico history.
